French President Emmanuel Macron will advocate for the issue of deploying a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. He will bring it up for discussion at the EU leaders' summit, Radio Svoboda informs.

Many high-ranking officials are publicly stating that these discussions are premature. In particular, this was expressed by the new top EU diplomat, Kaja Kallas. At the same time, an anonymous source told Radio Svoboda that this discussion is inevitable, given the French president's visit to Poland and the media debates on the topic of peacekeepers.

Two other diplomats who spoke with the news agency also noted that this issue is being raised in preparation for talks with newly elected US President Donald Trump and to ensure the EU's presence in peace negotiations. However, according to them, the topic of peacekeepers is still very "raw" and remains at the idea stage.

Peacekeeping mission in Ukraine

In recent weeks, European countries and the United States have been discussing the idea of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine as a security guarantee.

Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Center for Applied Political Studies Penta, commented to RBC-Ukraine that Russia may not agree to such a format if peacekeeping forces include soldiers from European countries.

At the same time, Trump has repeatedly stated that European countries should take the lead and send peacekeepers to the country.

However, Trump himself does not plan to involve US military personnel in this process.
