Macron on sending troops to Ukraine: Necessary wake-up call
Society's concerns over the potential deployment of troops to Ukraine are a necessary wake-up call, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
"These concerns are a necessary wake-up call," he said, commenting on the public's reaction to his initiative regarding the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine.
According to Macron, democracy is under threat, therefore "everyone must be ready to defend France."
He also emphasized that French youth "must understand what war in Ukraine means."
"If Ukraine falls, if we decide to abandon it, we will feel the consequences, because where will imperialist forces stop if they can advance so close to us? Our democracies still need to be defended. The threat exists, so we must be ready to defend the Republic," Macron concluded.
Macron's initiative on sending troops to Ukraine
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out the possibility that Western countries could deploy troops to assist Ukraine. However, according to him, there is no consensus on this issue.
Later, the French leader clarified that Paris could send its military to Ukraine if Russia resumes its advance on Kyiv or Odesa.
Several NATO countries have opposed this idea, including Germany, Czechia, Bulgaria, Poland, Spain, and Italy. However, there are countries willing to consider such a possibility, including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
On March 14, Macron once again made a statement about deployment of French troops to Ukraine, stressing that such an option is not ruled out.
