French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. They discussed, among other things, Russia's war against Ukraine, according to the French head of state.

According to him, the talks touched on trade relations between France and China, as well as key international issues.

Macron stated that he reaffirmed France's desire to continue building strong economic ties with China. He welcomed Chinese investment in his country.

According to the French leader, he and his Chinese counterpart agreed to move forward as quickly as possible on the issue of cognac — a matter of great importance to French producers.

"We share the same objective regarding the war waged by Russia in Ukraine: a lasting and robust peace. It begins with an immediate and unconditional ceasefire," Macron added.

The French president also emphasized the need to make progress toward a political solution that can ensure peace and security for all in the Middle East.

"We will work with China to prepare the Conference on Two-State Solution, scheduled for June in New York, which France is co-chairing with Saudi Arabia," the French president said.

China's position

China has officially declared support for peace between Ukraine and Russia and claims to maintain a position of neutrality. However, European and US officials have stated that China is a key enabler of Russia in the war.

Recently, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian commented on the possibility of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, saying that Beijing supports all efforts to achieve peace.
