Macron backs ex-Italian PM for EC head, but candidate declines - Reuters
President of France Emmanuel Macron is trying to convince the leaders of European Union countries to agree to the appointment of former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi as the head of the European Commission, but Draghi is not interested in the position, writes Reuters.
Next year, the term of office of the current head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is coming to an end. According to journalists, she may take up the position of the new Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Against this background, according to unofficial information, Macron wants to appoint Draghi as the next head of the European Commission.
Sources close to Draghi told Reuters that the former prime minister is not interested in taking up such a position.
It is worth noting that Mario Draghi held the position of President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019. From 2021 to 2022, he served as the Prime Minister of Italy.
Another candidate for the head of the European Commission
In early August, Politico reported that the current European Commissioner for Internal Trade and Services, Thierry Breton, could replace Ursula von der Leyen as the head of the European Commission.
According to journalists, Breton has concentrated significant power in his hands and effectively approves all important decisions of the European Union.
In particular, he approved decisions on the transfer of artillery shells to Ukraine.
