Massive downpour: Annual rainfall hits Ukraine's Lviv region in a single day, flooding 230 homes

In the Lviv region, nearly a year's worth of rain fell in just one day, causing a sharp rise in river levels. People were evacuated from flooded areas, according to Vitalii Turovtsev, head of the press service of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service (DSNS) in Lviv region.
Turovtsev noted that as of the evening of July 10, the rain had completely stopped in the region.
"The weather is now dry, clear, and is expected to remain according to the forecasts of the hydrometeorological center. River levels are receding. The water is also receding from flooded areas," he stated.
At the same time, the press service chief reported that DSNS units had been working through the evening and night to pump out water.
According to him, in total, over 10,000 cubic meters of water were pumped out. This included pumping from basements and parking areas where such work was possible.
A total of 179 rescuers and 49 units of equipment were involved in the efforts.
"In addition, we still have reserves. And now, with favorable conditions, water levels are dropping, and we can deploy all our additional motor pumps to drain water in areas where the situation now allows," Turovtsev added.
Consequences of the storm in the Lviv region
The head of the DSNS press service reported that around 230 homes were flooded during the storm.
"These are approximate numbers, as not all data from the region has been gathered yet. The Lviv district suffered the most. Eight people were rescued using boats, including five children," he explained.
He also noted that this refers to locations where the situation was most critical, where water came so close to residential buildings that people could no longer stay there.
"The rainfall amount was critical. It was practically the entire annual precipitation for the region, and it all fell within just one day. As a result, the water level rose in two rivers, which caused the most severe damage in the Lviv district of our region," Turovtsev summarized.
Storm in Lviv on July 10
On July 10, Lviv and its surrounding areas were hit by a severe storm. Due to the heavy downpour, parts of the streets were flooded, and traffic was either difficult or completely blocked in some areas.
Since Thursday morning, almost the entire western part of Ukraine has been affected by the storm.
