Lithuania’s President: EU keeps financing Russia by buying its energy

The European Union continues to buy energy resources from Russia, spending even more money on them than on aid to Ukraine, stated Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, according to Delfi.
Nausėda pointed out that after three and a half years of full-scale war in Ukraine, the EU still purchases 13% of its natural gas from Russia.
"The amount it pays for this oil and gas exceeds all the support it provides to Ukraine. This means that Europe is not even neutral and, essentially, financially more on Russia’s side than Ukraine’s," the Lithuanian President said.
He noted that while the EU is ready to impose sanctions on Russia, such inconsistency and inertia in buying Russian energy resources "should drive everyone to despair."
Trump’s criticism
Earlier, US President Donald Trump, speaking at the UN General Assembly, sharply criticized EU countries for buying oil from Russia.
According to him, this is shameful for the EU. By doing so, the bloc is financing a war against itself.
In response to the criticism, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said his country still has no intention of giving up Russian oil because it has no access to the sea.
