The American broadcaster ABC has officially ordered a new spin-off of the iconic medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” The project will be developed by franchise creator Shonda Rhimes and original series showrunner Meg Marinis, according to Deadline.

What is known about the “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off

The new series has not yet received an official title, but it is already known that it will be a medical drama set in rural West Texas. The story will focus on a team of doctors working at a medical center that serves as the last hope for people in a remote area.

The project will become the fourth series in the franchise, following the original show as well as the spin-offs “Private Practice” and “Station 19.” It will also be the first series in the franchise not set on the U.S. West Coast or in a major city.

One of the creators of the show is Meg Marinis, who has worked on “Grey’s Anatomy” for nearly two decades. She began her career on the series during its third season as a writers’ assistant and later became an executive producer and showrunner.

The executive producer of the new series will also be “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo, who played Meredith Grey. The premiere of the new project is scheduled for mid-2027.

The first season is expected to have around nine episodes. This is due to the channel’s new strategy of shortening seasons for mid-season television series.

What is known about “Grey’s Anatomy”

As a reminder, the medical drama first premiered in 2005, with the main character being a young surgeon, Meredith Grey. Together with her colleagues, she explores the world of medicine, falls in love, and experiences complex professional and personal dramas.

The series currently has 22 seasons. In March, it was renewed for another year, so viewers can expect new stories from the world of the medical drama.

The franchise spin-offs have also performed well on air. “Private Practice” ran for six seasons, while “Station 19” aired for seven seasons and concluded in 2024.
