Latvia to send CVR armored vehicles to Ukraine
The Latvian Ministry of Defense has announced the transfer of CVR(T) combat reconnaissance tracked armored vehicles to Ukraine, which were previously acquired from the United Kingdom. To maintain operational security, the ministry did not disclose the exact number of vehicles, citing Delfi.
Since 2023, Latvia has committed to providing military assistance to Ukraine amounting to 0.25% of its GDP annually until 2026. To date, Latvia has already supplied Ukraine with helicopters, self-propelled howitzers, and other weaponry.
The contract with the United Kingdom, signed in 2014, included the delivery of 123 armored vehicles, 116 of which have undergone modernization. The first deliveries took place in 2015, and an additional contract was signed in 2019.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds said that the procurement of new infantry fighting vehicles, which will replace the CVR(T), is in its final stages. These vehicles are essential for rearming the Latvian army and participating in tactical operations.
Latvia’s aid to Ukraine
Latvia actively supports Ukraine in its fight for independence. Riga provides substantial military and humanitarian assistance, including weapons, ammunition, medical supplies, and food. Latvia is also offering financial support to rebuild Ukraine’s destroyed infrastructure.
Earlier, the Latvian government decided to donate 20 vehicles to Ukraine, which had been confiscated from drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Additionally, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa announced a new military aid package for Ukraine during her visit to Kyiv.
