In November, Latvia will chair the UN Security Council for the first time, focusing on supporting Ukraine and countering Russian propaganda, according to Delfi.
Starting November 1, 2026, Latvia will hold the presidency of the UN Security Council for one month, overseeing all the body’s formal and informal meetings.
Latvia’s Ambassador to the UN, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, said the presidency would allow the country not only to raise its international profile but also to demonstrate its commitment to responsible leadership.
Latvia plans to use its signature events to advance its own priorities.
The country’s main goal on the Security Council is to strengthen its own security through active support for Ukraine and by preventing the normalization of Russian aggression.
Latvia is working to ensure that Russia’s war against Ukraine remains one of the key issues on the UN Security Council’s agenda.
The country aims to counter Russian propaganda and explain the global consequences of Russia’s actions to the international community.
This year alone, Latvia and its European allies have initiated 16 formal Security Council meetings dedicated to Ukraine.
In addition, Latvia regularly organizes informal briefings for other countries on current global conflicts.
A UN commission has recognized Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as war crimes, naming Russian leader Vladimir Putin as primarily responsible for the attacks.
Meanwhile, Türkiye and the UN are preparing a new round of talks between Ukraine and Russia aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Black Sea and protecting grain-carrying vessels.
