Latvia bans imports of multiple goods from Russia and Belarus

At an extraordinary session on July 23, Latvia's Saeima approved amendments to the Law on Support for the Civilian Population of Ukraine. The legislation authorizes the Latvian government to independently determine the list of products banned from import.
The import ban covers:
- books and periodicals (primarily in Russian),
- video games,
- toys and sporting goods,
- clothing and footwear.
The restrictions apply to goods imported directly from Russia and Belarus, as well as those shipped through third countries. However, the transit of these products through Latvia to other EU member states will remain permitted.
A total of 66 lawmakers voted in favor of the relevant amendments, eight voted against, and another eight did not participate in the vote.
Combating propaganda and economic ties
The bill was drafted by Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of efforts to further reduce economic ties with Russia and Belarus. The new measures are intended to complement existing European Union sanctions.
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže said the government will approve the specific list of banned products as soon as the law enters into force. She also stressed that Russia actively uses printed materials as a tool of propaganda, and that Latvia and the EU must counter such efforts.
The legislation also includes draft Cabinet regulations that the government is expected to adopt after the amendments take effect.
Earlier, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs said he does not rule out the possibility of Russian escalation against NATO countries. According to him, the Alliance must respond decisively to any threat from Russia.
Since July 1, Russia has temporarily suspended the movement of people, vehicles, goods, and cargo through railway border crossings with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia.
