On the evening of June 18, residents of Sumy heard the sounds of explosions. It turned out that Russian troops shelled the outskirts of the community, according to a statement from Ihor Kalchenko, head of the office of the Sumy Regional State Administration.
According to Kalchenko, the enemy attacked civilian infrastructure in the Sumy community after 9 p.m. Kyiv time.
"A few explosions heard by residents of the regional center, according to preliminary information, were a long-range MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System - ed.) strike on the outskirts of the community,” he said.
According to the head of the office of the Sumy Regional State Administration, there were no casualties.
Shelling of the Sumy region
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Sumy region has been constantly subjected to shelling due to its border location.
Russian troops can use weapons of various ranges, which allows them to carry out attacks even from short distances. This creates a constant threat to settlements located near the border.
In particular, on the morning of June 17, the Russian army struck Konotop in the Sumy region.
It was reported that the attack caused damage in a residential neighborhood.
Recently, the Russian forces have intensified offensive actions in the Sumy area. The alleged goal is to create a so-called buffer zone, which was recently announced by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
