Lard over soup: How legendary Ukrainian boxer Usyk's diet looks like

Undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk is returning to the ring after nearly a year-long break for a blockbuster bout against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven. To withstand extreme workloads — including 5 a.m. cardio sessions, swimming workouts, and exhausting evening sparring — the boxer relies not only on willpower, but also on a meticulously planned diet.
How Usyk prepares for competition
Oleksandr prepares under the supervision of a team of specialists led by nutritionist and endocrinologist Kateryna Tolstikova. The champion's nutrition plan is not about strict starvation diets, but about iron discipline and perfect balance.
The road to the ring begins not in the gym, but with medical testing. At the start of every training camp and then monthly, Usyk undergoes a comprehensive biochemical blood analysis. These results determine exactly what ends up on his plate.
The nutritionist's main task is to compensate for the athlete's enormous energy losses while preserving muscle mass and maintaining a strong immune system in the heavyweight division.

Simple foods, precise portions
There is nothing exotic in Oleksandr's menu — only clean, familiar foods common to most Ukrainians. The strategy varies by phase of training camp, but the foundation remains the same.
Complex carbohydrates
Buckwheat, whole-grain pasta, fruits, berries, dates, bananas (50–60% of the diet or 40% during certain phases).
High-quality proteins
Salmon, tuna, chicken eggs, protein shakes (about 30% of the diet).
Healthy fats
Walnuts, olive oil, high-quality Ukrainian leaf lard (about 30% of the diet).
A typical champion's lunch looks like this:
- A serving of buckwheat
- A salmon or tuna steak
- A large portion of vegetables with berries
- 2–3 boiled eggs
- A spoonful of olive oil and a handful of nuts.
For snacks, the boxer eats bananas, dates, protein shakes, and even nutritious sandwiches.
What Usyk never eats
Interesting that the only high-calorie product Oleksandr never gives up, even during the toughest training periods, is a piece of high-quality Ukrainian traditional leaf lard.
For a body operating at the limit of its abilities, it serves as an ideal source of pure energy. Usyk is also very fond of syrnyky (Ukrainian cheese pancakes), though their amount is strictly controlled by specialists.

During intense training camps, Usyk follows a strict no-go food list. Completely banned from his diet are:
- Sugar and sweet pastries — no fast or empty carbs allowed
- Hydrogenated fats, meaning trans fats, are fully eliminated
- Salt and potatoes are also off the menu
- The boxer also avoids liquid soups in favor of more concentrated meals, since soups make it nearly impossible to calculate the precise dry-weight balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
What champion eats after bouts
Once the fight is over and the strict regime ends, Oleksandr allows himself to relax. He is a huge fan of his mom's cooking and often says there is nothing tastier than her homemade pancakes.
The Ukrainian boxer also has a signature tradition: ever since his fight against Derek Chisora, Usyk has treated his opponents to juicy burgers after bouts as a sign of respect.
