Kyrgyzstan announces a coup attempt, several people arrested - Reuters
In Kyrgyzstan, authorities have reported an attempted coup. Seven individuals have been arrested on suspicion of organizing mass unrest to overthrow the government ahead of local elections, Reuters informs.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that the individuals are suspected of using national sports games and other competitions in the capital, Bishkek, to incite unrest.
"Under the guise of national sports games, they intended to call for acts of violence, were going to put forward unconstitutional calls, (and) destabilize the situation for the further violent seizure of power on November 17," the ministry said.
According to preliminary information, several foreign nationals and a former deputy general prosecutor are among those arrested.
Additionally, the authorities have seized weapons and ammunition from the suspected organizers of the unrest. They also confiscated:
- 1,000 bottles of vodka "to get the crowd drunk",
- 2,000 bottles of water,
- 1 ton of rice,
- and a horse intended for slaughter.
It should be noted that on November 17, local council elections will take place in several regions of Kyrgyzstan.
