Kyiv under massive drone and ballistic strike: Apartments ablaze, casualties reported

Today, January 9, Russia is attacking Kyiv with drones. Apartment buildings and cars are on fire in the city.

Last night, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported a massive drone attack by Russia on the Ukrainian capital. Several districts of the city have already been affected. In addition, the mayor reported strong explosions in the Obolonskyi district.

The mayor wrote that critical infrastructure in Kyiv was damaged due to the Russian attack. The city is experiencing disruptions in electricity and water supply.
Ballistic strikes on the capital
Around 2 a.m. Kyiv time, a series of strikes were heard in Kyiv amid a ballistic missile threat.
Later, around 3:00 a.m., new explosions were heard amid a missile threat caused by the takeoff of MiG-31K aircraft, which carry Kinzhal aero-ballistic missiles.
“The air defense forces are working to eliminate the threat in the skies over Kyiv. Stay in shelters until the official all-clear signal. Additionally, there is a threat of ballistic weapons use,” the Kyiv City Military Administration reported.
The Ukrainian Air Force also warned that groups of cruise missiles are heading toward Kyiv along the same route. In addition, groups of UAVs are still approaching the capital from the east and south.
Darnytskyi district
In the Darnytskyi district, a UAV fell in the courtyard of a residential building. A nearby shop was partially damaged. There are no fires or casualties. Another UAV is currently over the city center.
In addition, as a result of the enemy attack, fires have been reported in garages.
Dniprovskyi district
In the Dniprovskyi district, a fire broke out in a non-residential building due to falling UAV debris.
As a result of the enemy attack, a fire broke out on the 7th floor of a 9-story residential building.
Pecherskyi district
In the Pecherskyi district, a residential building caught fire. At another location in Pechersk, cars are burning in the courtyard of a residential building. In the same district, where UAV debris struck a 9-story residential building, partial damage to the building’s facade occurred.
Additionally, a residential building was damaged on the 20th floor level in a high-rise apartment building.
Later, a UAV struck a 24-story non-residential building, causing damage on the 23rd–24th floors and a fire.
Desnianskyi district
In the Desnianskyi district, a UAV hit the roof of a residential building on the 18th floor. All emergency services are responding. Additionally, Klitschko reported that a UAV struck a residential building at the 1st–2nd floor level, causing fires in several apartments.
In addition, as a result of the Russian attack, a fire was reported at a shopping center, Kyiv City Military Administration head Timur Tkachenko said. An enemy target also struck the grounds of a recreational facility.
Shevchenkivskyi district
The mayor also reported calls for medical assistance in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
In addition, the Russians attacked a civilian facility in this district.
Casualties in Kyiv from the drone attack
Kyiv City Military Administration head Timur Tkachenko reported that two people have been injured as a result of the Russian attack - one in the Dniprovskyi district and the other in the Desnianskyi district.
Later, Tkachenko reported that the number of injured has doubled, to four people. According to updated information from Klitschko, medical personnel provided on-site assistance to three injured people. One man was hospitalized.
Update: The mayor later reported three people killed and six injured.

Timur Tkachenko reported that the number of people injured has risen to 16.
Medics killed in the Kyiv attack
Klitschko also reported that in the Darnytskyi district, where a UAV struck a residential building, there was a subsequent hit. One medic was killed, and other medical workers were injured. All of them had arrived to provide assistance to people.
Air raid in Kyiv: drone routes
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the main wave of enemy strike drones is currently targeting the Kyiv region and the capital. In particular:
- Several groups of UAVs are approaching the capital from the east, southeast, and south.
- UAV groups are moving toward/passing Bila Tserkva from the southeast.
- UAVs are passing Zvenyhorodka in the west on a northern course (vector – Kyiv region, Bila Tserkva).
- Cherkasy region: UAVs are passing Zolotonosha and Kaniv en route to the Kyiv region.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russian occupiers could carry out another massive strike across Ukraine during the night. For this reason, it is crucial for Ukrainians not to ignore air raid alerts and to head to shelters.
The US Embassy also warned of a possible strike on Ukraine in the coming days.
The drone attacks on Kyiv are taking place amid peace talks. Today, Axios reported that Trump’s advisors met with a Russian special envoy in Paris to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine.
