An important special operation to establish an EW (Electronic Warfare) dome over Kyiv has been completed. These systems disrupt the MESH radio communication of jet-powered Shahed drones, according to a statement by the Advisor to the President of Ukraine on Defense Technologies, Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov, on Telegram.

EW dome over Kyiv

According to Flash, the so-called "war of cities" is ongoing. One of the successful special operations in this war is the protection of the capital with EW means against remotely controlled jet-powered Shahed drones.

"One of the technologies that allows the enemy to search for targets and control 'Shaheds' from a distance is called MESH radio communication. A Russian operator controls the drone via a radio modem on the drone from Russian territory. Therefore, it was necessary to create a protective 'dome' over Kyiv that would prevent this," he says.

A large volume of work had to be completed across the entire city within a few weeks, noted Flash. All major manufacturers of EW equipment were involved in the process, manufacturing and installing equipment around the clock.

The following entities worked on the operation:

  • The General Staff;
  • The Ministry of Defense;
  • The Ministry of Internal Affairs;
  • The National Security and Defense Council;
  • The Office of the President;
  • Other units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The operation was under the constant supervision of the President, he clarified.

"The operation turned out to be complex not only technically but also organizationally. Because we are talking about many hundreds of locations for antennas and equipment across the entire city. This operation forced the adversary to pause, modernize the Shahed drones, and look for other solutions," says Flash.

Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Geran-5 type can accelerate to speeds of 1,000 km/h during certain maneuvers.

Furthermore, Russia has attacked Ukraine with a new modification of the Geran-5 called the Geran-5 K5-K. The missile has been equipped with an optical navigation system, as well as greater range, speed, and flight altitude.
