The operation by Ukraine’s Defense Forces in Kupiansk, Kharkiv region, was planned and carried out starting in autumn, according to Viktor Trehubov, head of the communications department of the Joint Forces Grouping.

“If we include the planning stage, the operation began back in autumn,” Trehubov said.

He noted that Russian forces are still trying to do something in Kupiansk to justify the false statements made by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin about the city being captured.

“They are now in a difficult position politically, because the leader of the Russian Federation made a statement, and the president of Ukraine refuted it not only with words, but also visually and physically. Now the Russians need to show the world that they can be trusted at all after such a bluff,” the spokesperson added.

Ukraine’s operation in Kupiansk

As a reminder, on December 12, Russian occupying forces found themselves encircled in Kupiansk — a city that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had claimed had already been “liberated” twice.

The command of the 2nd Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine, known as Khartiia, reported a successful counterattack by Ukraine’s Defense Forces near Kupiansk.

At least 200 Russian soldiers were trapped in the city. Ukrainian defenders cleared the Yuvileinyi residential district of Russian troops. During the counteroffensive actions, Russian forces lost more than 1,000 soldiers killed alone.

Against the backdrop of these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Kupiansk sector on December 12.

Ukrainian troops in Kupiansk also destroyed a gas pipeline that Russian troops had been using to infiltrate the city. As a result, Russian access routes into the city were cut off.
