North Korea held a grand military parade, during which Kim Jong Un showcased a new intercontinental missile to delegations from China, Russia, and Vietnam, according to Reuters.
The missile in question is the new intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-20, which Kim Jong Un displayed during the large-scale military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
The parade began in Pyongyang late on Friday, October 10, continuing a series of celebratory events that started on Thursday.
High-ranking officials from China, Russia, and Vietnam were spotted in the stands. In particular, North Korea received Chinese Premier Li Qiang, a Russian delegation led by former President Dmitry Medvedev, and the head of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam.
Particular attention was drawn to the demonstration of the new Hwasong-20 missile, which North Korean media have already dubbed the country’s most powerful strategic nuclear system. According to Pyongyang, this type of missile is capable of striking targets on US territory.
However, international analysts continue to doubt the ability of North Korean warheads to withstand re-entry into the atmosphere and accurately hit their targets.
During his speech, Kim Jong Un addressed the military, saying that the heroism of the KPA [Korean People’s Army] will be seen not only in their homeland but also on the frontlines of socialist construction, hinting at the participation of North Korean forces in external operations.
Before the parade, Kim held talks with Medvedev. The Russian representative thanked North Korea for the sacrifice of North Korean soldiers in the battles near Kursk, calling it confirmation of the deep trust between Moscow and Pyongyang. In response, Kim expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with Russia and expand strategic exchanges.
Analysts note that the parade in Pyongyang was not only a demonstration of strength but also a diplomatic signal of the strengthening of the DPRK’s military-political alliance with Moscow and Beijing amid rising global tensions.
North Korea is on the path to rearmament
On October 6, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected a new military destroyer and announced his intention to strengthen North Korea’s naval presence.
Shortly before this, the North Korean leader held a meeting with key officials and scientists from the country’s nuclear research institutes. According to North Korean media, he stated that the further development of the nuclear program is the main priority of the country.
