Kazan airport in Russia closed over reported drone threat
The airport in Kazan, Russia, temporarily suspended all flight arrivals and departures on the morning of January 5. This measure was taken due to the potential threat of an aerial attack involving drones, according to the Russian outlet Astra.
Russian media cited a statement from Rosaviatsiya indicating that "temporary flight restrictions for civilian aircraft" were imposed at Kazan airport.
The Russian agency did not provide an explanation for the closure of the air hub.
Meanwhile, the Telegram channel Shot reported that the Carpet plan was implemented at Kazan airport due to an alleged threat of a drone attack.
Carpet plan
In the Russian Federation, the Carpet plan is typically implemented at airports by air defense authorities in exceptional situations, such as an imminent threat of drone attacks.
During the enforcement of these restrictions, all flights are prohibited within a 200-kilometer radius of the airport where the plan is in effect.
Additionally, the plan involves evacuating civilians from the air hub during this period.
It was previously reported that Kazan airport was closed due to drone threats in both December and October of last year. In all these cases, the Carpet plan was enacted in response to the risk of drone attacks.
Notably, last night and early this morning, Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg was also shut down due to the danger posed by UAVs.
