A powerful earthquake struck Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East, triggering a tsunami that destroyed a fish processing plant, Russian media reports.

The tsunami damaged the Alaid fish plant on Paramushir Island. Flooding of the facility was first reported on July 30. Now, Russian sources say the plant is almost completely submerged. It has stopped operations and is unlikely to resume work soon.

The plant's Director said the tsunami wave flooded all buildings up to 2.5 meters high — this disabled nearly all equipment at the Russian facility.

Management complained that the disaster washed 120 tons of salmon and 1 ton of scallops into the ocean.

Earthquakes in Kamchatka

On July 30, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit near the Kamchatka Peninsula. It was followed by 30 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 2 to 5.

This was the strongest earthquake in the region in over 70 years. For more details, read RBC-Ukraine's report.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami, prompting warnings across several Pacific countries.

In addition, Kamchatka's seismic activity reawakened Eurasia's tallest volcano, Klyuchevskaya Sopka. For the first time in 600 years, the Krasheninnikov volcano also erupted on the peninsula.
