Kallas: Supporting Ukraine costs less than Russia's victory

Supporting Ukraine is a beneficial deal compared to the possible consequences of a Russian victory in the war, according to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
"Russia’s overnight strikes on Kyiv make clear that Russia intends to press on with war. In Berlin today we discussed how to increase our support to Ukraine while building up Europe’s defence," Kallas said.
She emphasized the importance of continuing to support Ukraine.
"Supporting Ukraine is a bargain compared to the cost of Russia's victory. Wars are lost by those who run out of money or soldiers first," the EU diplomat noted.
According to Kallas, this is precisely why “we must continue to pressure Russia with sanctions.”
“Sanctions clearly work better when they are matched by our international partners,” she added.
Sanctions against Russia
As a reminder, on October 23, the United States announced sanctions against Russia’s two largest oil companies—Rosneft and Lukoil—in order to force Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to sit down at the negotiating table with Ukraine.
The US Treasury specifically called on Russia to immediately agree to a ceasefire. It also clarified that Washington’s new restrictions apply not only to the two main Russian companies but also to 36 of their subsidiary structures.
The next day, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced that the European Union had approved the 19th package of sanctions, which targets Russia’s “shadow fleet” and imports of liquefied natural gas.
