A real behind-the-scenes drama is unfolding around the next fight of undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk.
After the World Boxing Council (WBC) officially sanctioned his title defense against interim champion Agit Kabayel (27-0, 19 KOs), the German boxer has moved to open threats and psychological pressure.
'Run or vacate the title': Kabayel’s harsh message
The German heavyweight posted a provocative video on social media, visibly showing that he allegedly cannot reach the Ukrainian champion — suggesting that Oleksandr simply is not picking up the phone.
Kabayel stressed that backroom negotiations are over and that the fate of the belt now depends entirely on Usyk’s decision, with the organization setting a fixed deadline.
The German also urged the Ukrainian to honor the promise he made after his recent victory over Rico Verhoeven in Egypt (via technical knockout in the 11th round).
At that time, Kabayel stepped into the ring, and the Crimean-born boxer accepted the challenge, asking influential figure Turki Al ash-Sheikh to help organize the event.
"The WBC wants to see the fight. The fans want it too. And you accepted it in the ring. So, Usyk: let’s make it happen. And if not, vacate the title and give the next generation the chance to take over," the challenger wrote.
What awaits Usyk if he refuses the fight
Promoters of the German fighter have already assured him that the title fight will take place under any circumstances.
If Oleksandr Usyk refuses to step into the ring against the mandatory challenger within the set deadline, the WBA, IBF, and The Ring titles will remain with the Ukrainian. However, the prestigious green-and-gold WBC belt would be immediately stripped from him.
At the moment, Usyk has already confirmed his willingness to sit down at the negotiating table, so the final decision now lies with the Ukrainian team and investors from Saudi Arabia.
