US Speaker of the House Mike Johnson expressed confidence that the government funding bill will be passed this week. At the same time, he hinted that the blame would fall on Senate Democrats if the bill is ultimately blocked, according to CNN.

"The CR (continuing resolution) will pass,," Johnson said in a comment to CNN.

When asked what would happen if the bill is blocked, Johnson responded:

"I don’t think it’s going to get blocked," said the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

He told reporters that he was confident the funding bill would be passed this week because no one wants to shut down the government, and we are governing responsibly as Republicans.

"It’s going to be up to Chuck Schumer and the Senate Democrats to do the right thing, and I don’t think they’re going to shut the government down," he added.

CNN explains that if the House of Representatives passes the bill, it will then go to the Senate, where some Democrats will have to vote alongside Republicans. To ensure the bill’s passage, at least 60 votes will be needed.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of a government shutdown. According to him, the blame for this would fall on Democratic Party congress members.
