Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have begun developing a sequel to the Christmas hit How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The filmmakers plan to bring back key creators of the original film, including Jim Carrey, who once played the title character, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Work on the script and the legacy project
The world-famous actor and comedian is currently in talks to join the film and return to his role as the Grinch. The screenplay is being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel. They previously worked on well-known series such as Barry, Silicon Valley, Veep, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
By the way, this role is considered one of the most memorable in the actor’s career. To transform into the green character, the star had to spend several hours a day in the makeup chair.
Thanks to his facial expressions, physical performance, and signature comedic style, Carrey turned the Grinch into not only a funny villain but also a character with deep emotions and his own story. Many believe his performance was one of the key reasons for the film’s success, which grossed over $345 million worldwide. For its makeup design, the film won an Academy Award in the “Best Makeup” category.
From a children’s book to a Christmas classic
The original film was released in November 2000 and became the highest-grossing film of the year at the US box office. With a budget of $123 million, the movie earned over $345 million worldwide.
The film is based on the 1957 children’s book by Dr. Seuss. It tells the story of a gloomy resident of Mount Crumpit who decides to steal Christmas from the residents of Whoville.
Despite more than 25 years having passed since its release, the film remains one of the most popular Christmas projects and regularly appears in rankings of the most-watched holiday movies.
