Italy to file magistrates complaint over Colosseum closure during Vance visit

An Italian non-profit organization is preparing a complaint to magistrates over the closure of the Colosseum during the visit of US Vice President J.D. Vance’s family, ANSA reports.
The Italian consumer rights group Codacons plans to file a formal complaint with the Rome prosecutor’s office after the Colosseum was closed to tourists during Vance’s visit.
The closure of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks sparked outrage among tourists who were denied entry.
Codacons President Carlo Rienzi said the organization views the decision as a serious violation of tourists’ rights, especially those who had purchased tickets or were waiting in line.
Rienzi noted that it is important to determine whether the incident constitutes a criminal offense, particularly regarding potential violations in the provision of public services.
The Colosseum was closed for security reasons during the visit by Vance’s family. While the US Vice President stayed at Villa Taverna, his wife Usha visited the Colosseum.
Codacons plans to file a complaint with the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office to investigate and determine responsibility for the closure, which the organization believes violated the rights of citizens.
US Vice President J.D. Vance recently called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's remarks "absurd," after Zelenskyy accused him of trying to justify Vladimir Putin during the war in Ukraine.
