The US deal on Russian diesel fuel poses serious risks and could legitimize Moscow, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said, according to ANSA.
Meloni criticized US President Donald Trump's decision regarding Russian diesel fuel.
She emphasized that such steps pose clear threats, as they finance the war and weaken existing sanctions against Russia.
"The deal on Russian diesel fuel announced last Friday by US President Donald Trump is a choice that I consider very risky," the prime minister stressed.
During her speeches in parliament, she also confirmed that Rome's position on supporting Ukraine remains unchanged.
"No one will convince me that the capitulation of those defending their freedom can be called peace: only a just peace can last and protect Europe and our interests," Meloni stated.
Ahead of the EU Council meeting, Italy's Senate and Chamber of Deputies approved resolutions put forward by the majority.
Meanwhile, opposition parties refused to participate in the vote due to disagreements over the procedure for submitting the documents and commitments to Kyiv.
Meloni previously criticized the agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the supply of petroleum products.
In her opinion, the initiative cannot address the White House's key economic objectives and instead creates serious risks to European security.
Meanwhile, in the United States, a bipartisan group of twelve senators sent an official letter to the US president.
The lawmakers are demanding the immediate cancellation of the agreement with the Kremlin, calling it an unacceptable move.
