Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized people protesting the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

In her post, the Italian prime minister wrote that thousands of Italians are working around the clock to keep everything running smoothly during the Olympics.

She noted that many of them are volunteering their time, wanting the country to look good, be admired, and respected. Meloni added that there are also others working against these efforts.

"Enemies of Italy and Italians are protesting against the Olympics, and these images are broadcast on screens around the world… Others have even cut railway wires to disrupt train departures," she wrote.

Meloni expressed solidarity with law enforcement, the city of Milan, and all those whose work could be undermined by these actions.

Sabotage in Italy

On the morning of February 7, several acts of sabotage on railway lines were reported in northern Italy, causing major disruptions to train services.

Near the city of Pesaro, unknown individuals set fire to a distribution panel. A few hours later, in Bologna, cut electrical cables were discovered, along with an explosive device nearby.

Italian police said that no one has claimed responsibility for the incidents so far, and authorities believe the events could be connected.

As a result, the state railway company, Ferrovie dello Stato, temporarily closed Bologna station. Train services were fully restored only by the afternoon.

According to Reuters, Bologna is a key hub in the Italian railway network, linking southern cities with the north, including the capital, Milan.

2026 Winter Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics are being held this year in two Italian cities, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, from February 6 to 22.

Ukrainian athletes also took part in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.
