Israel reports missile attack from Yemen and operation of air defense systems
Israeli military forces announced on the night of December 24 that air defense systems were activated in response to a projectile launched toward the country from the territory of Yemen. The airborne target was intercepted during the latest attack, reports the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Israeli military reported that around 01:46, sirens sounded in several areas in the central part of the country. This was linked to a projectile launched towards Israel from Yemen.
Following this, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported the interception of the Yemeni missile, which did not reach Israeli territory.
"Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago, a projectile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted prior to crossing into Israeli territory," stated the Israeli military.
The IDF also noted that sirens for missile danger were activated due to the risk of debris falling from the intercepted missile.
Missile attacks on Israel from Yemen
Fighters from the Yemeni Houthi movement have previously targeted Israeli territory. The militants justify their attacks by citing their support for the terrorist organization Hamas, which launched a large-scale attack on Israel last spring, after which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began a military operation in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis have also been targeting commercial ships navigating the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea.
Earlier reports indicated that in early October, the Houthis launched a ballistic missile at Israel. The hostile target was successfully intercepted by Israel's air defense.
On September 15, a Houthi missile struck central Israel for the first time, but it was also destroyed by air defense.
At the end of September, the Houthis also launched a missile at Tel Aviv's airport.
