Earplugs have long been a popular solution for blocking noise. However, regular use during sleep may have subtle effects on ear health and even the quality of sleep, according to Health.com.

Potential risks of sleeping with earplugs

Otolaryngologist and medical doctor Hamida Jalilian explained that every time something is inserted into the ear canal, there is a risk that something could go wrong.

For example, earplugs can push earwax deeper into the canal, causing a blockage that may affect the eardrum. They can also increase the risk of ear infections.

The skin of the ear canal is very thin and sensitive, so rough earplugs or frequent use can irritate. Contact dermatitis may occur, especially with silicone earplugs or those coated with preservatives.

Additionally, earplugs can trap heat and moisture in the ear canal, creating a favorable environment for bacterial and fungal growth.

How to use earplugs safely

  • Choose earplugs specifically designed for sleep, especially if you sleep on your side
  • Use only clean earplugs
  • Replace disposable foam earplugs frequently
  • Insert them gently without forcing
  • Avoid putting them in damp ears
  • Regularly check ears for excess wax
  • Stop using if your skin is sensitive or irritated

Types of earplugs, their benefits and risks

  • Foam: Offer the strongest noise reduction but may amplify internal sounds like heartbeat, breathing, or tinnitus. The surface can sometimes be abrasive—compress them tightly before inserting and allow them to expand in the ear canal.
  • Silicone: Usually more comfortable than foam, softer but less effective at blocking noise. They may shift during sleep and may not seal all ear shapes perfectly.
  • Wax: Sit near the entrance of the ear rather than deep in the canal, ideal for side sleepers. They may sometimes move, leave residue, or break. Before use, warm them in your hands and shape them into a ball to cover the ear canal opening.
