Iran has announced the possibility of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz under new rules following the suspension of a US military mission, according to CNN.
New procedures in the Strait of Hormuz
Iranian media reported that safe transit through the strategic waterway is now possible under what officials described as "new procedures."
The decision came after the United States suspended its military operation in the waterway.
New rules in the Strait of Hormuz
The announcement came after the United States suspended its military operation in the region.
Washington launched the mission, known as Project Freedom, on Sunday to assist commercial vessels passing through the strait.
However, the operation was paused on Tuesday, with US officials citing progress in peace negotiations.
Iranian authorities did not specify what the new procedures involve.
At the same time, Tehran expressed gratitude to ship captains and vessel owners for their cooperation.
Iran’s plans for transit control
Iran continues to claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and had previously announced plans to charge fees for safe passage through the waterway.
Many world leaders have warned that such a move would be illegal and could set a dangerous precedent.
Background
The Strait of Hormuz had remained under partial blockade amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States linked to the ongoing conflict in the region.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump temporarily suspended Project Freedom, which was aimed at ensuring the safe passage and escort of commercial ships.
Later, Washington warned that it could resume bombing campaigns against Iran if Tehran fails to comply with previously reached agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Amid the rising tensions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appealed to China, urging Beijing to tell the Iranian leadership that continuing the conflict would lead to Tehran’s global isolation and harm China’s economy as well.
