US Vice President J. D. Vance stated that Iran is no longer capable of producing nuclear weapons, as the United States has destroyed that infrastructure, according to The Guardian and CNN.

"Iran was very close to having a nuclear weapon,” Vance told Fox News.

"Now Iran is incapable of building a nuclear weapon with the equipment they have because we destroyed it," Vance said.

Vance’s interview came immediately after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, set to take effect later today.

"We were actually working on that just as I left the White House to come over here. So that’s good news, that the president was able to get that across the finish line," Vance said.

He also mentioned that he read a draft of Trump’s post "two minutes before we went on the air." According to Vance, it was slightly different from what the US president had shown him a few hours earlier.

Background

On the night of June 13, Israel began striking military and nuclear facilities in Iran. Since then, the two countries have regularly exchanged attacks.

On the night of June 22, the United States struck three nuclear sites in Iran, in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. In response, on June 23, Iran launched an attack on at least the Al Udeid air base in Qatar, a major US military installation.

Just a few hours ago, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire. It is set to begin within hours, once both sides complete their current missions. According to Trump, Iran will be the first to cease fire. If the ceasefire holds for 24 hours, the war will be considered over.
