Instagram has ditched the logo it had used for 10 years. Meta has decided to refresh the platform’s visual identity, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri.
Reactions to the redesign and the executives’ stance
Mosseri described the new logo as “sharper and more modern,” emphasizing that it still references the original design while maintaining simplicity.
Despite the fact that users often react negatively to changes to familiar brands and logos, Instagram’s updated design has received not only complaints but also compliments.
Users noted its fresher look and praised the choice of font.
Debate over the font
The internet is already full of jokes about how the shape of the letter “r” makes the company name look like “Instagzam.” However, the “Instagram” brand is so recognizable that most people immediately understand what the word says despite the artistic elements.
The new wordmark font is reminiscent of handwriting (cursive), adding classic flourishes to the letters “s,” “r” and “g.”
Experienced users point out that this is an interesting choice given that younger generations generally no longer learn to write in cursive, so they may not immediately understand why the shape resembling the sail of a small boat is actually the letter “s.”
How is Meta reacting?
Instagram last updated its design in 2016. At the time, the company replaced the classic brown camera with a rainbow stripe with a bright pink gradient, which remains the app’s icon to this day.
Meta has not yet commented on the redesign or indicated whether users should expect other changes to Instagram’s design anytime soon.
