'In her sleep, peacefully and without pain': World’s oldest person passes away
At the age of 117, Maria Branyas Morera has passed away. She was the oldest person in the world, according to a message from the Spanish woman's relatives, which they posted on Twitter (X).

Maria was a Spanish citizen and survived two wars. She was born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco.

She passed away as she wished: peacefully and without pain. A few days ago, she told us: "Someday I will leave. I will no longer try coffee, won’t eat yogurt, and won’t pet Fairy... I will also leave behind my memories, my reflections, and cease to exist in this body. I don’t know, but it will be very soon, this long journey will end. We will always remember her for her advice and kindness," the message reads.

Branyas passed away in her sleep on August 19, 2024, in Olot, at the age of 117 years and 168 days.

Maria Morera was one of the oldest known people to have survived COVID-19, which she contracted at the age of 113 in April 2020.
She also holds the record as the oldest person ever living in Spain, with her age verified by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
