Improve your memory for up to 24 hours - Simple exercise
Do you have a good memory? A new study has shown that a brisk walk, dancing, or climbing a few flights of stairs can improve memory for about 24 hours, says the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
What the study shows
Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates the release of neurotransmitters - effects that are known to provide short-term cognitive enhancement.
According to the scientists, research has now shown that the benefits may last longer than previously thought.
About 76 participants, aged 50 to 83, wore activity trackers for eight days and underwent daily brain tests.
Those who performed more intense physical activity than usual scored better on memory tests the next day.
“The findings suggest that a lifestyle including MVPA alongside healthy sleep habits may contribute to supporting daily cognitive function for older adults,” said Mikaela Bloomberg, one of the study's authors.
Moderate or intense activity involves anything that speeds up your heart rate - it can be brisk walking, dancing, or climbing a few flights of stairs. It does not have to be a structured exercise.
Participants who spent less time sitting and slept six or more hours also had better results.
However, based on this study, it cannot be determined for certain whether these short-term cognitive boosts contribute to long-term cognitive health, and while there is a lot of evidence that physical activity can slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia, it is still a question.
