The International Atomic Energy Agency will deploy its largest mission of this kind to substations supporting Ukraine's nuclear power plants to ensure nuclear safety and security, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said following a meeting with the agency's Director General Rafael Grossi in Warsaw, according to Ukraine's Foreign Ministry.

International Atomic Energy Agency to deploy a major mission

The parties discussed:

  • The situation at and around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant;

  • Security threats caused by Russia's ongoing militarization;

  • The need to ensure nuclear safety and security.

Sybiha thanked Grossi for the decision to deploy missions to 19 electrical substations that are critical to the safe operation of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

This will be "the largest deployment of International Atomic Energy Agency missions of this kind." The minister also believes these measures are a timely step toward ensuring safety amid Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy system.

In late August, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant operated solely on diesel generators for more than a week after losing its external power supply. At the time, the plant had approximately 10 days' worth of fuel reserves remaining.

In addition, a local ceasefire came into effect on the morning of June 5 along the front line near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. It was necessary to repair a power line and prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.
