Hungary working on reassessing its NATO membership - Orbán
Hungary is working to "redefine" its NATO membership. Budapest wants the option to opt out if the Alliance engages in combat operations outside its member countries, according to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
In an interview with Hungarian state radio, Orbán made the following statement:
"Our lawyers and officers are hard at work to see how Hungary can maintain its NATO membership in a way that it wouldn't have to take part in NATO actions outside of NATO territory," Orbán said in an interview with Hungarian state radio.
Hungary's stance on the war in Ukraine
Hungary is blocking Ukraine's future accession to the EU and NATO. Budapest often opposes sanctions against Russia and delays the process of providing financial or other assistance to Ukraine.
Hungary has not provided military aid to Ukraine. Western media have reported that the country also banned the transit of weapons through its territory.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has made several statements criticizing Ukraine. Hungary recently blocked a Council of Europe resolution on Ukraine's peace formula. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that other peace plans must be considered, hinting at Russia's position.
