Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has issued an ultimatum to the European Union. Among his demands is the rejection of Ukraine's accession to the EU.

The Hungarian Prime Minister published a post on Facebook titled "What the Hungarian People Want from Brussels." In it, he laid out 12 demands. Among them are:

  • We want a Europe of nations (echoing Elon Musk's earlier advice to Germans to "remember that they are Germans first and Europeans second");

  • We want equality before the law for all member states;

  • Return illegally seized powers to member states;

  • National sovereignty and a strong veto right for national governments;

  • Remove Soros agents from the European Commission and corrupt lobbyists from the European Parliament;

  • "Do not bury the future of our grandchildren" and cancel the EU's debt;

  • Do not interfere with our National Guard protecting our borders. Do not accept migrants, and remove illegals from our territory;

  • "Corrupt" dollars and euros should not reach EU member states;

  • Ban "unnatural" re-education of our children;

  • We want to protect Europe's Christian heritage;

  • We demand peace in Europe;

  • The Union, but without Ukraine.

Orbán's stance on Ukraine

It is worth noting that Viktor Orbán was re-elected as Hungary's Prime Minister for the fifth time in 2022. His policy towards Ukraine sharply differs from that of other EU countries.

Orbán is the primary opponent of aid to Ukraine. Hungary has not provided military assistance to Ukraine. The head of the Hungarian government opposes Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO. Additionally, Hungary consistently blocks the imposition of sanctions against Russia.

As noted by European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas, the EU is seeking mechanisms to counter Hungary's obstruction of decisions. This includes the potential formation of coalitions.
