How many cups of coffee per day are safe for your health?
Coffee is a popular drink that most people consume several times a day. A nutritionist has revealed the exact number of cups that can be safely consumed per day and when it’s best to avoid the beverage to protect your health.
This was shared in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by Kateryna Tolstykova, an endocrinologist and author of the book Stress Through Life - My Mood.
How much coffee can you drink per day?
According to the expert, coffee is a controversial product because it has both benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to stick to the right amount.
If you drink five cups every day, it’s very bad. It can affect your microbiome and cardiovascular system. Coffee also contains polyphenols and antioxidants that protect liver cells and the nervous system from oxidation, but only if consumed in its pure and high-quality form.
However, it’s important to understand that during roasting, a glycation reaction occurs—this results in aging metabolites and cellular oxidation.
Tolstykova noted that one cup a day is safe, provided it doesn't contain a large amount of sugar or honey.
"You just need to find a balance in each product and observe how it affects you specifically," she added.
It’s also important to know that coffee should not be consumed on an empty stomach, as it impacts the mucous membrane and leads to the release of stomach acid. As a result, this habit can lead to gastritis, mucosal damage, and gastrointestinal issues in general.
