Russia launched a missile and drone strike on Kyiv overnight on August 28. More than 20 locations across the capital sustained damage, and among the dead and injured are children.

RBC-Ukraine reports below everything known so far about the consequences of the enemy’s combined attack on Kyiv.

What Russia uses to strike Kyiv

The air raid alert in Kyiv lasted more than 8 hours. The enemy first launched drones at Ukraine, including Kyiv, in the evening. Later, reports came of Tu-95 bombers taking off. Around 3 a.m. local time, Russia struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles, then launched Kinzhal missiles from a MiG-31. By morning, the enemy attacked the capital with cruise missiles alongside Shahed UAVs.

"Combined strikes, from different directions. Systematically targeting ordinary residential buildings. Tonight it was decoys, Geran drones, Shahed UAVs, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, Kinzhal missiles," reported Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Tymur Tkachenko.

Strike on Kyiv: Info about casualties

As of this morning, four people were confirmed killed in the attack, including two children. More than 30 people were injured, among them children as well. According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, 5 children aged 7 to 17 were wounded.

As of 08:10 a.m. Kyiv time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported 8 killed victims in the Ukrainian capital.

Destruction at 20 locations: aftermath of the shelling of Kyiv

The Russian strike caused damage across 7 districts of Kyiv:

  • Darnytskyi;
  • Dniprovskyi;
  • Solomianskyi;
  • Shevchenkivskyi;
  • Holosiivskyi;
  • Obolonskyi;
  • Desnianskyi.

In the Darnytskyi district, a five-story residential building was destroyed, and rescuers are pulling people from the rubble. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the building was hit by a missile around 3 a.m. local time, and 3 killed victims were killed at this site. People may still be trapped in the basement.

Also in Darnytskyi district, two other apartment buildings, a private home, and a kindergarten were damaged.

In the Dniprovskyi district, more residential buildings were hit. In Holosiivskyi, more than 10 buildings had their windows blown out. In central Kyiv, a shopping mall was struck.

Overall, more than 20 locations across the capital suffered destruction, with about 100 sites damaged. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine deployed aviation to extinguish fires.

Earlier reports indicated the Russian strike on Ukraine damaged railway infrastructure in the Vinnytsia region. Explosions also sounded in Zaporizhzhia.

In addition, Ukrainian Railways said that Intercity+ passenger trains were hit.
