During cleaning, many people unconsciously make mistakes that reduce cleaning effectiveness and can contribute to the buildup of dirt and bacteria. This affects not only cleanliness but also household hygiene, according to Martha Stewart.

Mixing cleaning products

Using multiple cleaning products at once may seem to deliver better results, but in reality, it can cause dangerous chemical reactions and damage surfaces.

The most common mistake people make is combining bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaning agents. This can release toxic fumes and damage surfaces.

Use only one type of cleaning product at a time. If you need to switch products, thoroughly rinse the surface with water first.

Choosing safer alternatives, such as natural all-purpose cleaners, can also reduce the risk of hazardous chemical reactions.

Skipping dry cleaning

Spraying cleaner onto a dusty table or a countertop covered in crumbs only creates a mess. This is especially true when mopping floors — if you don’t vacuum or sweep first, you will spread hair, sand, and food particles around.

Always take a moment to remove dry debris first. A dry microfiber cloth or a damp sponge works well to remove debris from countertops before applying any spray or liquid cleaner.

Starting with dry dusting ensures that wet cleaning products can effectively deal with dirt instead of just spreading it.

Using abrasive materials on delicate surfaces

When wiping delicate surfaces such as glass, mirrors, or stainless steel, never use abrasive materials. They will scratch and damage the surface, making future cleaning even more difficult.

Chemical cleaners can also easily strip sealants from delicate surfaces such as wood, marble, and granite.

Rinsing cleaning products too quickly

Every cleaning product needs enough time to break down grease, soap scum, or bacteria.

It is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results. Dwell time usually ranges from 30 seconds to several minutes. Letting the product sit allows it to work effectively, reducing the need for extra scrubbing.

Just make sure the cleaner is not left on for too long, as this can cause dulling or deformation.

Cleaning glass and mirrors in direct sunlight

Another common cleaning mistake is spraying glass cleaner on windows or mirrors when they are exposed to direct sunlight. This causes the product to dry too quickly and can leave streaks.

Wipe glass dry using a clean microfiber cloth.

Not cleaning cleaning tools

Cleaning tools also need cleaning. Many people reuse dirty sponges, mop heads, or vacuum filters. These items can harbor bacteria and mold and spread dirt and germs.

When you use one cloth to clean the toilet and then move to the kitchen, you are spreading germs.

To prevent cross-contamination, assign separate cloths for each specific area.

Wash microfiber towels in hot water after each use and replace sponges frequently. Clean or replace vacuum filters and mop attachments as needed.

Using dirty mop water

One of the biggest mistakes is using the same bucket of dirty water throughout the entire home. This redistributes dirt and leaves streaks.

It is better to have one bucket with clean water and diluted floor cleaner, and another for wringing the mop. Frequent rinsing of the mop and changing the water helps keep floors truly clean.
