Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine has achieved 100% alignment with the European Union’s policies on external and defense affairs. This marks a historic achievement.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukraine’s adherence to EU foreign policy statements and decisions reached 95% in 2024 and 100% in the first months of 2025.

“This was confirmed during the EU’s screening of Ukrainian legislation under the 'Foreign, security and defence policy' chapter, completed in early March,” the ministry explained.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this extraordinary achievement reflects Ukraine's strong commitment to integration with the European Union as it continues to harmonize its foreign policy with EU standards.

"As the screening of Ukraine’s legislation for the EU negotiations advances, the next key milestone is the opening of the 'Foreign Relations' negotiation cluster, which could pave the way for further progress in Ukraine’s EU accession talks," the ministry concluded.

Talks on Ukraine’s EU accession

On December 14, 2023, EU leaders approved the start of negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the bloc during a summit. This decision came amid concerns that Hungary would block the move by vetoing it.

The EU leaders’ negotiations lasted more than three hours, and the summit's start was delayed due to Budapest’s stance. For Ukraine to join the European Union, its legislation had to be assessed for compatibility with EU laws.

On January 17, 2024, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the start of the screening process for Ukrainian legislation.

Thus, one year ago, the first meeting on screening Ukrainian legislation for EU compatibility took place in Brussels.
