The successor to the slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah could be Hashem Safi al-Din. He is the second-in-command of the group, according toThe Guardian.

Safi al-Din may replace Hassan Nasrallah as the leader of the Lebanese militant group. According to sources, Safi Al Din survived Friday’s Israeli attacks on Beirut, during which Nasrallah was killed.

What is known about Safi Al Din:

  • As head of the executive council, Safi Al Din oversees Hezbollah’s political affairs;
  • Safi Al Din is part of the Jihad Council, which oversees the group's military operations;
  • Safi Al Din is a cousin of Nasrallah and, like him, a cleric;
  • Safi Al Din’s public statements often reflect Hezbollah's support for the Palestinian cause;

It is also noteworthy that in 2017, the US Department of State declared Safi Al Din a terrorist, and in June, he threatened a large-scale escalation against Israel following the assassination of another Hezbollah commander.

Assassination of the Hezbollah leader

As a reminder, on September 27, the Israeli army carried out an airstrike on the Lebanese capital. It was later revealed that the target of the attack was Hassan Nasrallah, who had led Hezbollah for 32 years.

Rumors spread in the media about Nasrallah’s fate after Israel's airstrike. Some outlets reported that the militant leader had been killed, while others claimed he was still alive.

However, today, September 28, Israel officially announced the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
