Hayden Haynes, Speaker Johnson's aide, arrested for DUI in police car crash

Hayden Haynes, the chief of staff to House Speaker Mike Johnson, was arrested on Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence after hitting a parked police vehicle, AP News reports.
According to a statement from the US Capitol Police, Haynes “backed into a parked vehicle” just before midnight. Officers responded to the scene and took him into custody. He was later released.
Speaker Mike Johnson defended his aide, saying, “I’ve known Haynes for more than a decade. He is trusted and respected, and he has my full faith and confidence to lead.”
A spokesperson for Johnson also stated that the speaker was “aware of the encounter” and emphasized that Haynes has an “esteemed reputation among Members and staff alike.”
Haynes, a longtime aide to Johnson, has served as his chief of staff since the Louisiana Republican took on the speakership in 2023. He has not yet publicly commented on the incident.
