Handles up or down? Correct way to put silverware in dishwasher named
How to properly load cutlery in the dishwasher (photo: Freepik)
The way you place cutlery in the dishwasher affects cleaning quality, hygiene, and safety. But should you put utensils in handle-up or handle-down?
Real Simple explains this.
Forks handle-down
If your cutlery basket has a dedicated section, place forks handle-down so water can reach all tines.
However, if the basket lacks a separate compartment, you can alternate directions- some handle-down, some handle-up- to prevent them from sticking together. All times should remain free to ensure water and detergent reach every surface.
Knives handle-up
Knives are best placed blade-down, handle-up to:
- Avoid cuts when unloading
- Allow water to clean the blade effectively
- Prevent the knife from falling and causing injury
Place them in the cutlery basket, standing vertically with the handle up and blade down. Don’t pack knives too tightly - water needs space to circulate freely.
Knives not suitable for the dishwasher:
- Professional chef knives
- Knives with wooden handles
- Ceramic knives
Ladles handle-down
It should be placed in the cutlery basket. Place the ladle, skimmer, and large spoons vertically, handle down. For long utensils, use every other slot to prevent them from sticking together.
If the ladle is very large, it is better to lay it horizontally on the top rack.
Do not place the ladle in the bottom rack among the plates, as it can block the spray arm. Also, do not stack large utensils on top of each other.
Cutlery that should not go in the dishwasher
Wood. This includes wooden spoons, forks, and spatulas. They can crack, warp, and absorb water.
Aluminum (non-anodized). This refers to older spoons, pots, and baking molds. In the dishwasher, it can darken and oxidize.
Copper and brass. Decorative utensils should not be washed in the dishwasher, as they can tarnish and develop stains.
Silver (especially with stainless steel). Silver spoons and forks can darken due to chemical reactions.
