Hamas announces name of its new leader
According to an official announcement by Hamas, the new head of the organization's political bureau will be the Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, who is considered the architect of the October 7 massacre in southern Israel, reports the Times of Israel.
The Times of Israel states that Sinwar has been hiding in Gaza since the attack on Israel.
In February, the IDF released a video filmed on October 10, which purportedly shows him walking through a tunnel in Gaza with several members of his family. “The hunt for Sinwar will not stop until we catch him, dead or alive,” IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a press conference upon releasing the footage.
Hamas' 50-member council elected Sinwar. Experts consider him the most influential figure in the organization.
Death of Ismail Haniyeh
On August 31, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear. Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for the attack, although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the operation.
Sources from several Western editions reported that explosives were planted in the building in Tehran where Haniyeh was staying to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian president.
The British edition of The Telegraph reported that Israel's intelligence agency Mossad recruited agents from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps unit responsible for the security of high-ranking officials to plant explosives in three rooms of the building where the Hamas leader was staying.
Iran claims that a short-range missile killed Haniyeh.
