The UN International Court is set to make a decision this week on the admissibility of Ukraine's complaint against Russia regarding the distortion of the concept of genocide, according to the court's press service.

"On Friday 2 February 2024, the International Court of Justice will deliver its Judgment on the preliminary objections raised by the Russian Federation in the case
concerning Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation: 32 States intervening)," the statement said.

It is also noted that the decision will be announced at 3:00 PM local time (4:00 PM Kyiv time). If the court deems Ukraine's complaint partially or fully acceptable, the substantive consideration of the case will follow.

Backstory

On February 26, 2022, Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Russia, seeking to hold the aggressor country accountable for distorting the concept of genocide. Moscow used fake claims of "genocide in Donbas" as a pretext for initiating a full-scale war.

In October 2022, Russia objected and cast doubt on the possibility of considering such a complaint.

The latest hearings on Ukraine's complaint took place in September 2023.
