Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most anticipated games of the decade. Despite GTA 5 still holding top positions in sales charts, interest in the next installment of the franchise continues to grow. TechRadar, a technology-focused publication, shares what is already known about GTA 6.
When GTA 6 will be released and on which platforms
The project is being developed by Rockstar Games, with the release of GTA 6 scheduled for May 26, 2026, for Xbox Series XS and PlayStation 5. This was announced on May 2, 2025, when the company postponed the launch to the following year.
Moreover, the game will be optimized for the PlayStation 5 Pro, potentially making it the most comfortable platform for playing. However, there is no official word yet on a PC version. According to a former Rockstar developer, porting the game to PC is "a very complex process."
However, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told IGN in an interview that a PC release will still happen later, reminding that Rockstar traditionally releases games on consoles first, followed by other platforms.
Main characters and plot
According to the first trailers, GTA 6's plot will focus on two main characters: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Lucia is a former inmate, and Jason is an ex-military man and small-time drug dealer. Players will most likely follow their attempts to pull off a major heist.
The second trailer, released on May 6, 2025, focuses on Jason. The first trailer, released on December 4, 2023 (one day earlier than planned due to a leak), introduced Lucia. Both videos showcase a renewed Vice City, coastal areas, bars, and even alligators.
Where the events will take place
The game is set in the state of Leonida, which developers say will be "the most expansive and detailed open world in the series’ history." In addition to Vice City, the map will feature Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Galaha.
Bloomberg previously reported that the original GTA 6 map was even larger, with territories inspired by North and South America. However, at the stage of development the scope was reduced.
At the same time, Rockstar plans to expand the game world after release. The map will be regularly updated with new locations and missions to reduce pressure on the development team and ensure consistent updates.
Supporting characters and rumors
Among the confirmed supporting characters are:
- Boobie Ike, an influential entrepreneur from Vice City who owns a chain of clubs and a recording studio
- Cal Hampton, a conspiracy theorist and longtime friend of Jason
There were also rumors online that actor Troy Baker (The Last of Us) would voice the male protagonist. However, the actor himself denied these rumors, emphasizing that the role was given to another actor who deserves recognition for his work.
