Google Maps to rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, but only in US
The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America on Google Maps, but this change will only apply to users in the United States, CBS News reports.
The company mentioned receiving several questions about renaming places on Google Maps. This can happen when updates occur in official government sources.
"When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the US quickly to show Mount McKinley and the Gulf of America," Google clarified.
The company also emphasized that the name of a place may appear differently depending on the user's location. If the name differs across countries, users will see the official name used in the country where they access Google Maps.
CBS News notes that although the US government will officially call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, for example, in government documents and official maps, other countries are not required to recognize this name.
Renaming of the Gulf of Mexico
US President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders after his inauguration, including one to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
On January 25, the US Department of the Interior officially announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. The mountain Denali also received a new name and is now called Mount McKinley.
