A global IT failure related to the interaction between CrowdStrike antivirus and Windows is shaking the world's largest companies. It has caused problems in the operation of banks, airports, the London Stock Exchange, and more.

What is affected

  • Windows operating system reports problems.
  • Flights of several major US airlines, including Delta, United and American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Allegiant, and Sun Country, were suspended due to communication problems.
  • Turkish Airlines also suspended flights over a “major global outage”.
  • Berlin-Brandenburg Airport in Berlin stopped working because of technical problems, as well as systems in the airports of Spain, Britain, Ireland, Australia, and other countries.
  • The British SkyNews TV channel was disconnected due to a global outage.
  • In Ukraine, the Nova Poshta delivery service was down, and Vodafone, Sense Bank, and Monobank had problems.

What's the reason

According to The Verge, thousands of Microsoft users around the world are experiencing a blue screen of death - a system message about a critical malfunction. Preliminarily, the failure was caused by an update of CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity software company.

Bloomberg also writes that banks and airlines around the world are operating intermittently after Microsoft reported the outage.

“Current status: We’re continuing to progress on our mitigation efforts for the affected Microsoft 365 apps and services. We still expect users to see remediation as we address residual impact. Scope of impact: This issue may be impacting any user attempting to use various Microsoft 365 apps and services,” Microsoft statement says.

Oleh Horokhovskyi, co-founder of Ukraine's Monobank, says that a global IT failure was caused by the interaction between CrowdStrike antivirus and Windows.

“Many companies are knocked down,” Horokhovskyi said.

Where IT failures are now

The global outage has led to disruptions in the work of airlines, airports, media and banks, and telecom operators around the world. Problems have been reported in the US, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Türkiye, India, and Germany, among others.

US

Three major US airlines have suspended flights due to communication problems: Delta, United, and American Airlines. Frontier Airlines, Allegiant, and Sun Country also faced problems.

UK

London Stock Exchange is also currently down due to a cyber incident.

Germany

In Berlin, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport announced the suspension of flights over a technical failure.

Spain

Spanish airports also faced problems because a computer system failed. As a result, there may be flight delays, according to the airfield operator Aena.

Türkiye

Turkish Airlines has also warned of a global failure that has caused problems with ticket booking and check-in.

Australia

In Australia, a global technical failure affected telecom operators, banks, and airlines.

Japan

Japan's McDonald's has suspended about a third of its restaurants across the country after a global system failure.

Outage in Ukraine

The delivery company Nova Poshta failed in Ukraine (but the company has already resumed its work). Mobile operator Vodafone, and banks - Sense Bank (the problem was fixed) and Monobank - were also affected.
