The German government has agreed to allocate an additional €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year. This decision follows the Bundestag’s approval of a large-scale fiscal reform plan, according to Reuters.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is stepping down from his position, previously insisted that easing borrowing rules be a prerequisite for additional aid to Ukraine.

Finance Minister Jörg Kukies informed the parliamentary budget committee that the conditions for approving the additional funds had been met.

In an official letter, the ministry agreed to additional spending of €2.547 billion this year. Together with other allocations, including reimbursements from the European Peace Facility, Germany will provide €3 billion in total.

Between 2026 and 2029, Kukies plans to allocate €8.252 billion in military aid to Ukraine, bringing the total amount to more than €11 billion.

The budget committee is expected to approve the allocation on March 20, provided that the upper chamber, the Bundesrat, approves the constitutional reform.

On March 18, the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, approved major changes to Germany's budget rules, aimed at increasing military spending and boosting economic growth.

EU leaders will meet on March 19-20, with Ukraine’s aid among the key topics of discussion.

As uncertainty grows over the future of US security commitments under President Donald Trump, European nations face increasing pressure to demonstrate their commitment to Ukraine in its war against Russia — particularly through military expenditures.
