Germany warns Russia of consequences if it rejects ceasefire proposal on war in Ukraine

Germany expects Russia to agree to a ceasefire, or else Moscow will face consequences, The Guardian reports, citing German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
According to Wadephul, Germany "expects Russia to agree to a ceasefire and then be prepared to negotiate." In the event of failed dialogue, Berlin is prepared to offer additional arms packages to Ukraine.
German Foreign Minister also warned Russia of further consequences, including tighter sanctions.
Upcoming Russia-Ukraine negotiations
On the night of May 11, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin rejected the ceasefire proposal and instead suggested resuming direct talks with Ukraine and holding a meeting on May 15 in Istanbul.
That same morning, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Ukraine’s readiness for dialogue, but stressed that a confirmed ceasefire, set to begin on May 12, was a necessary condition. This initiative had earlier been supported by Ukraine, the United States, and the Coalition of the Willing.
Later, Türkiye officially declared its readiness to act as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia.
Donald Trump's Special Envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, also emphasized that negotiations can begin only after an actual halt in hostilities.
